London City Airport expansion – United Kingdom
MPS supplied a total of five different modular pontoon configurations consisting in total over 70 container elements to BAM Nuttall for the expansion of London City Airport. The project includes the construction of a new taxi runway and expansion of the passenger terminal buildings. Completion is scheduled for 2020.
To extend the taxi platforms and passenger terminal, a new 75,000 m³concrete deck will be constructed on the King George V dock. The prefab concrete elements are fastened on over 1,000 steel drilling piles at 10 m water depth.
Renowned civil construction firm BAM Nuttall Ltd requested MPS for the supply five different pontoon configurations, to support piling machines, transport of piles and spacer barges to position those piles. Due to the location of London City Airport, which partly has restricted water access, a modular solution was required.
In addition to the MPS modular pontoons, BAM Nuttall also chartered a 60 x 22 x 4m flattop barge of Neptune Marine and mobilization transport was carried out by Landfall Marine Contractors, which are both group partners of MPS. Through cooperation MPS strives to deliver turnkey solutions and be a one-stop-shop for its clients by providing all required equipment in a fashionable and timely manner.
