Removal of the old Zezelj bridge – Serbia

MPS has been contracted by ALE Heavylift to assist in the removal of the old Zezelj bridge in Serbia. In cooperation with Modular Pontoon Systems, ALE Heavy-lift sourced a solution to minimize budget and time, whereby strong currents also played a significant role in the project conditions. Ultimately, an 36.58 x 34.16 x 2.44m modular pontoon was used to remove the bridge sections, according to schedule.

The bridge was to be removed in sections, with four spans weighing 200t and measuring 75 m long, while the fifth weighed 360t and measured 200m long. A solution was needed to perform the removal operation while overcoming the river’s strong current.

At an early stage, ALE Heavylift contacted MPS to investigate the possibilities of using a modular pontoon, which would significantly reduce budget and time to mobilize. Both ALE and MPS cooperatively engineered and calculated the possibilities. Resulting in a modular pontoon of size 36.58 x 34.14m. consisting 42 pieces  480 type MPS units.

At the project location in Serbia, equipment was assembled and installed. ALE Heavylift’s Mega Jack 800 was installed with modular spreader beams on a modular pontoon. With a capacity of 800t per tower, Mega Jack 800 allowed the load to be lifted and distributed appropriately while making best use of the pontoon’s capacity. This was especially important during the pontoon’s navigation to the jetty from its initial position between the bridge piers.
