MPS – Modular Pontoon Systems supporting the Ligerz Rail Tunnel Project
We’re proud to see multiple MPS Modular Pontoons in operation on one of Switzerland’s most ambitious rail infrastructure projects: the Ligerz Tunnel, part of the SBB’s double-track expansion between Ligerz and Twann.
Why MPS – Modular Pontoon Systems?
With limited space between the Jura slopes and Lake Biel, and no capacity for traditional land-based logistics, they turned to MPS – Modular Pontoon Systems for a range of modular floating solutions. Delivered to the lake site by road, the scope includes modular transport and crane pontoons to support their waterborne operations.
Nearly one million tons of excavated material will be transported via modular transport pontoons to a nearby cement plant to be reused as raw material. Approximately 10% of this material will be used to build a 228-meter lake embankment near the tunnel portal toward Biel, where space constraints prevent the construction of a second track.
